Nothing.

I’m embarrassed to admit to myself that I’ve checked my phone approximately forty times since my lifeguard shift started this morning. All for nothing, of course, because I haven’t received a single call or text from Declan.

Nothing. Nada. Nil.

I blow my whistle at a couple of kids running on the cement by the pool, making a time-out sign with my hands. They reluctantly transition to speed walking, pumping their arms like windmills, then glance at me for approval. I give them a thumbs-up.

Nice, right? Sitting perched several feet above everyone else and having them respond instantly to my commands is a nice departure from my usual bit-player role in my social life.

I always snicker at articles or blogs about girls “choosing” the wrong guys for romance, like this stream of studs is paraded in front of us, awaiting our approval. This may be true for girls like Sara, but not for me and not for the vast majority of girls I know. I don’t feel like I’ve ever “chosen” a guy in my life. The guys I’ve dated—or, more accurately, hung out with—fell into my life mostly by default, generally due to circumstances like logistics or process of elimination. I don’t feel like I ever “chose” a guy.

Until now. Dammit, I really like Declan, and I like him enough to go for it. Yes, I’m willing to take a risk, to take a stab for once in my life at “choosing” a guy. But as I glance at my phone for the forty-first time of the day, I see the downside to this empowerment. What if Declan doesn’t want to be chosen? What if last night was just a one-time thing? What if Varun’s insistence on stand-up behavior turns out to be less lame than I suspect?

Not that I don’t consider Declan a stand-up guy. He’s been perfectly nice. He gave me a ride home after our first practice! It doesn’t get much more gentlemanly than that, right? And frankly, if he’s a little looser, a little more casual, or even a little more, you know, experienced than Varun might like, well, that’s fine with me. I just like him. Period. I don’t want to overthink it. And who knows, maybe the reason he isn’t calling or texting is because he’s planning to stop by . . .

“Hey, Scarlett.”

I jump a little, then look down and see Zach peering up at me, blocking the sun with his hand.

“Oh, hey . . .”

“Didn’t mean to startle you.”

“No, no . . . I’m just sitting here trying to keep kids from face-planting on the cement.” I glance around. “Where’s your mom?”

“Um, not feeling her best, unfortunately,” Zach says. “But the guys came along today.”

My heart skips a beat, and my eyes scan the grounds.

“Mike and Kyle just dove in,” Zach says, pointing toward the lap lanes.

“Oh . . .”

“So did you have fun last night?” Zach asks, and I feel my neck grow warm. What does he mean by fun? Does Declan
